Saponara

Saponara is a small historic village in the province of Messina, set on a hill on the northern side of the Peloritani Mountains. Its inland position opens onto a hilly landscape, with views stretching from Milazzo towards the Aeolian Islands, while the municipal area also reaches a coastal hamlet. The village has the character of an old borgo, with everyday life still closely tied to popular devotion and inherited local traditions.

Its identity is strongly feudal. The original settlement developed around a fortified hilltop nucleus used for control and lookout, and from the 12th century Saponara held feudal status before passing through several Sicilian noble families, including the Moncada and Alliata. Its origins may reach back to around the year 1000 or earlier, though the exact foundation is uncertain; in the second half of the 17th century it was raised to a duchy. Between its mountain setting, panoramic position and memory of noble rule, Saponara stands out as a Messinese village where defensive history and traditional village culture remain closely connected.
