Santa Domenica Vittoria is a tiny borgo in the province of Messina, set high in the Alcantara valley at about 1,080 metres above sea level. It lies on the slopes of Pizzo Rotondo, at the beginning of the eastern Caronie area, between the landscapes of Etna and the Nebrodi, with the northern side of Mount Etna forming part of its wider horizon.
The village has a medieval and feudal identity, though its earliest origins are not described consistently in the available records. Its documented history becomes clearer in 1628, when it took its current name and the old feud passed from Michele Spadafora Maniaci, Marquis of Roccella, to Sebastiano Pagano or the Pagano family. Before that, it was linked to Roccella Valdemone and to the noble Spadafora family.
Today Santa Domenica Vittoria keeps the scale and quiet character of a small historic Sicilian village. Its position near the eastern edge of the Nebrodi Park, close to the source area of the Alcantara River, and its low light pollution give it a distinctive mountain-valley identity shaped by open views, silence and night skies.
