San Piero Patti

San Piero Patti is a historic hill town in the Province of Messina, set in a panoramic position in the Timeto River valley at the foot of the Nebrodi Mountains. From parts of its territory, the landscape opens toward the Gulf of Patti and the Aeolian Islands, giving the village a strong mountain-and-sea setting that frames its medieval character.

Its identity reaches back to Greek times, when it was known as Petra, a name linked to a large red granite rock in the area. Later Roman, Arab, Norman, Swabian and feudal phases all left their mark; the Arab occupation began in 827, while in the 11th century Count Roger brought the town back under Norman control. San Piero Patti also preserves a distinctive gallo-italic dialect, connected to Piedmontese and Provençal influences and still spoken locally. This combination of ancient name, layered rule and living linguistic memory gives the town a character that is unusually specific within inland Sicily.
