Aci Catena

Aci Catena is a small comune in eastern Sicily, set in the territory of the Aci river valleys near Acireale. Its landscape is tied to the fertile Reitana district, an area known for its springs, giving the village a setting shaped as much by water and cultivated land as by local tradition.

The town’s identity is strongly devotional: its name derives from the cult of Maria SS. della Catena, a connection that still defines its cultural memory. Aci Catena also has much older roots, with evidence of prehistoric settlement and traces from the Roman imperial age linked to the spring-rich territory.

Established as a comune in 1826, Aci Catena today is best understood as a historic and traditional village where religious identity, ancient settlement and the landscape of the Aci valleys meet in a particularly local Sicilian character.
