Rosolini

Rosolini is a historic town in south-eastern Sicily, in the Province of Siracusa near the border with Ragusa. It lies at the foot of the Iblei Mountains, set on a rocky front between the deep cuts of Cava Grande and Cava Scardina, in a landscape of caves, canyons, rock formations and cultivated countryside.

Its identity is closely tied to rural life, religious devotion and the layered history of the surrounding territory. Prehistoric, Roman and rupestrian Christian traces point to settlement long before the modern town took shape, while its later development belongs to the feudal world of the Platamone family from the 15th century.

Rosolini was formally founded or refounded in the early 18th century by Don Francesco Cirino Moncada, Prince of Lardaria, after he obtained the right to populate the area. With its grid-plan layout, agricultural memory and position among the quarry valleys of the Iblei, Rosolini stands out as an early-modern Sicilian town rooted in a much older rocky landscape.
