Canicattini Bagni is an inland town in the Siracusa area, set on the eastern slopes of the Hyblaean Mountains at about 362 metres above sea level. From its position in the heart of the Iblean territory, it looks out over a broad landscape of olive trees and ravines, giving the town a distinctly inland Sicilian character.
The area has a much older memory than the present town suggests, with sources linking local habitation to at least the Neolithic age. In the Greek period, the territory lay along inland routes between Syracuse and its sub-colonies, while the current settlement took shape in the 17th century: in 1682, Marquess Mario Daniele Partexano received the licentia populandi to build and populate the town centre.
Today Canicattini Bagni is closely associated with Liberty-style architecture and music, an identity that gives its historic centre a recognisable character within the Iblean landscape. Its distinctiveness lies in this combination of ancient settlement traces, a clearly documented 17th-century foundation, and a local culture remembered through decoration, sound and community tradition.
