Portopalo di Capo Passero is a seaside and fishing village at the extreme south-eastern tip of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. Set where the Ionian Sea meets the Channel of Sicily, it faces an offshore island and a coastline of promontories, rocky edges and long sandy stretches, giving the village a clear two-sea identity.
Although the area was known in Greek times and has roots associated with the Arab period, the present settlement developed later, in the early 19th century. For much of its modern history it belonged to nearby Pachino, becoming an autonomous comune only in 1975.
Today Portopalo keeps a peaceful maritime character shaped by fishing, the open horizon and its position at Sicily’s southern limit. Its distinctiveness lies in this combination of frontier geography, older Mediterranean memory and the everyday life of a traditional coastal village.
