Campofelice Di Fitalia

Campofelice di Fitalia is a small inland village in the Province of Palermo, set in a hilly agricultural landscape about 734 metres above sea level. Its territory lies around the Piana di Vicari, on the northern slopes of Pizzo Mezzaluna and within the upper basin of the San Leonardo river, where wheat fields, olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees and cultivated plots define the scenery.

The village grew in the first half of the 19th century around the older casale of Fitalia, a feudal settlement already recorded by 1101. The modern town was officially founded in 1810 by Girolamo Settimo Calvello e Naselli, Prince of Fitalia, after Ferdinand IV of Bourbon reconfirmed an ancient settlement privilege, at a time when Sicily’s feudal system was coming to an end.

Its name is tied both to the fertility of the land and, in local tradition, to Maria Felice, wife of the founder. Still closely associated with cereal cultivation and rural work, Campofelice di Fitalia is distinctive as a compact agricultural borgo whose identity is summed up in its reputation as the “Town of Wheat.”
