Venetico

Venetico is a small Sicilian village in the province of Messina, set between the Tyrrhenian coast and the slopes of the Peloritani Mountains. Its identity is split between Venetico Superiore, the older hill settlement between the Senia and Cocuzzaro valleys, and Venetico Marina, the coastal area that gives the town its seaside character.

Its medieval story is closely tied to feudal Sicily. The earliest documented information belongs to the Middle Ages, when the settlement is said to have begun with a tavern and four farming families. At the beginning of the 13th century, the estate was granted to the brothers Simone and Rainero de Venetico, from whom the village took its name; in 1447 it passed to Corrado Spadafora, under whose family it expanded.

Local memory also links the waters off Venetico Marina to the naval battle of Nauloco in 36 BC, a tradition that adds an older resonance to the village’s coastal setting. What makes Venetico distinctive is this compact meeting of mountain village, Tyrrhenian shore and named medieval lineage within one small community.
