Valdina

Valdina is a small municipality in the Province of Messina, set in the Niceto valley on the northern slopes of the Peloritani Mountains, where inland village life meets the Tyrrhenian coast. Its setting gives it a layered character: agricultural, quiet and traditional, with views that open toward Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.

Historically, the village was known as Maurojanni and developed within a feudal landscape connected to the Aragonese period under Frederick II of Aragon. Its later identity is strongly tied to the Valdina family, who are associated with the village from the 16th century, with Pietro Valdina named prince in 1643.

Today, Valdina remains defined by this meeting of mountain and sea, by its inland centre and coastal area, and by a community memory rooted in agriculture, religious devotion and local traditions. Its distinctiveness lies in the way a small Peloritani village preserves the name, feudal legacy and landscape links of a place once known as Maurojanni.
