Monforte San Giorgio

Monforte San Giorgio is a small medieval hill village in the Province of Messina, set on the first slopes of the Peloritani Mountains above the fertile Niceto Valley, only a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coast. Its compact centre, narrow lanes and village squares give it a distinctly old urban character, with views opening across the surrounding landscape and, in clear weather, towards the Aeolian Islands.

The village’s identity reaches far back: its origins are traced to the Bronze Age, with early settlement associated with the Sicani before later Greek and Roman phases. A defining layer came in the 8th century, when Byzantine monks from the East settled here, leaving memories that still echo in traces of Greek rite, language, dialect and place names.

Monforte also carries the memory of Arab and Norman Sicily. After the Arab period, the Norman expedition of Count Roger d’Altavilla passed through in 1061, an episode that remains part of local cultural memory. What makes Monforte San Giorgio distinctive is this close overlap of Peloritani landscape, medieval village form and layered Byzantine, Arab and Norman identity.
