Moio Alcantara is a small historic village in the Province of Messina, set in the Alcantara Valley at the foot of Monte Mojo, along the Alcantara River and on the slopes of Etna. Its identity is closely tied to a volcanic and river landscape, where lava, water and rural life define the character of the surrounding countryside.
Although the municipality was officially founded in 1602, when Palmerio Lanza obtained the *licentia populandi*, the area’s memory reaches much further back. The Alcantara River was known to the Greeks as Achesines or Assinos, later taking its Arabic name *Al Quàntarah*, meaning “arch bridge”, while the place-name Mojo is recorded by Idrisi in 1150 as *al-Mudd*.
Today, Moio Alcantara remains a compact agricultural village with strong local traditions and a setting that gives it a distinct place in eastern Sicily: not simply a settlement near Etna, but a community shaped by the meeting of an isolated volcanic cone, an ancient river valley and a long sequence of Mediterranean names and histories.
