Milazzo

Milazzo is a coastal town on a peninsula reaching into the Tyrrhenian Sea, set between two gulfs and defined by its long relationship with water, trade and defence. Today it is both a seaside town and an important port for the Aeolian Islands, with a character split between a modern maritime area and an older hilltop quarter.

Its identity goes back far beyond the classical age: the area is linked to very ancient Neolithic settlement, while the Greek town was founded in 716 BC by settlers from Zancle. Known in antiquity as Mylai or Mylae, and associated with the name Aurea Chersonesos, the “Golden Peninsula”, Milazzo later passed through Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Aragonese and Spanish phases, each reinforcing its strategic role.

This layered past gives Milazzo a more complex personality than a simple resort town. Its position, mythic associations and long use as a fortified naval centre make it one of Sicily’s most distinctive maritime towns: a place where the coast is not just scenery, but the reason the town exists.
