Malvagna

Malvagna is a small rural borgo in the Province of Messina, set in a privileged position in the Alcantara Valley, facing Mount Etna and Monte Mojo and lying south of Monte Castelluzzo. Its setting gives the village a strong landscape identity: a quiet historic settlement connected to the valley’s agricultural life, with open views toward some of eastern Sicily’s most recognisable volcanic scenery.

The village’s identity rests on two main historical layers. The area preserves evidence of a Byzantine phase, while the present settlement is generally linked to the 17th century and the Lanza family, later passing through noble connections that included the Migliaccio. Malvagna also held the title of Principato, a reminder of its former feudal status within this part of the Alcantara area.

In 1947, after the division of the territory of Lanza, Malvagna became a municipality in its own right. Today its distinctive character comes from this compact mix of valley landscape, Byzantine memory, princely origins and rural Sicilian continuity.
