Fiumedinisi is an ancient hill village in the Province of Messina, set in the Nisi Valley on the eastern side of the Peloritani Mountains. Its centre stands at about 190 metres above sea level on the right bank of the Fiumedinisi stream, enclosed by high peaks and a rugged nature-reserve landscape.
The village’s identity reaches back to the Greek colony of Nisa, founded in the 7th century BC by colonists from Chalcis who were drawn to the area’s mineral deposits. In the Norman period, the settlement was associated with the name *Flumen Dionisyi*, a memory that links the place both to its river setting and to older traditions connected with Dionysus.
Today Fiumedinisi retains the compact character of a medieval borgo, with a dense pattern of lanes, underpasses, courtyards and stone portals. Its distinctive appeal lies in this layered continuity: a mountain village where Greek origins, Norman memories, feudal history and a long mining past remain part of the local identity.
