Alì is a small medieval borgo in the Province of Messina, set 450 metres above sea level on the slopes of Sant’Elena hill in the Peloritani mountains. Often described as a “hanging veranda over the Ionian Sea,” it sits among rural hills, olive groves, orchards, valleys and rocky ground, with wide views towards the Ionian coast, the Strait of Messina and Etna.
The village’s origins are not straightforward: some accounts connect its earliest settlement with colonists from Elis and a possible Greek root, while others point to a Saracen foundation in 1093. What gives Alì much of its character today is the visible Arab influence in its narrow, irregular lanes, alongside a later medieval and Norman background and a strong religious memory.
Quiet, traditional and closely tied to its hillside setting, Alì is distinctive for the way its mountain landscape, layered origins and Ionian outlook meet in one compact village.
