Tremestieri Etneo is a small town in the province of Catania, set on the southern slopes of Mount Etna between the volcano and the city of Catania. Its position gives it a practical, everyday character: residential and commercial, yet closely tied to the Etnean landscape and within reach of both urban and coastal Sicily.
The town’s identity is older than its present appearance suggests. Archaeological evidence points to settlement in the area since remote times, encouraged by its central position and favourable environmental conditions. Its name is linked to the Latin *Tria Monasteria*, traditionally understood as “three monasteries”, and it was also known historically as Tremestrieri.
Tremestieri Etneo has been repeatedly reshaped by earthquakes and lava flows, which altered the original settlement. After a feudal history connected with the Aragonese period, it was acquired in 1641 by the merchant Giovanni Andrea Massa. Today, its distinctiveness lies in this combination of Etna-side resilience, local village memory and a strategic position between mountain, city and sea.
