Gravina di Catania is a town in the province of Catania, set on a plain along the southern slopes of Mount Etna, around 340–355 metres above sea level and close to the city of Catania. Its identity is rooted in the countryside: once a rural hamlet surrounded by broad agricultural land, it still carries the character of a local farming and artisan centre.
The settlement was originally known as Prachi, a name linked to its rural setting of fields and plains. It later belonged to the feudal sphere of the princes of Valguarnera, before passing in 1669 to Girolamo Gravina, from whom it took the name Gravina. In 1862, “di Catania” was added to distinguish it from Gravina di Puglia.
Today, Gravina di Catania is defined less by grandeur than by continuity: Etna’s lower landscape, a working agricultural memory, and a name that preserves the passage from countryside hamlet to Sicilian feudal town.
