Calatabiano

Calatabiano is a small borgo in the province of Catania, set near the Alcantara River and less than three kilometres from the Ionian Sea. Its territory stretches from the coast towards the lower slopes of the valley, where rural land, hills and groves of medlar and citrus give the village a landscape that feels closely tied to agriculture and the river plain.

Its identity is strongly marked by the older fortified settlement above the present town and by the layers of Arab, Norman and later feudal history associated with the area. The name is said to come from the Arabic *Kalat Bian*, meaning the “Castle of Bian”, linked to an Arab hakim remembered in local tradition. In 1396, Calatabiano became a feudal estate of the Cruyllas family, adding another chapter to its medieval character.

After the 1693 earthquake in eastern Sicily, the remaining inhabitants of the ancient hilltop borgo moved down to the site of the current town. Today, Calatabiano stands out for this contrast between valley village and older upland memory, with a cultural identity still rooted in long-standing religious tradition and rural life.
